gave

Lamentations 3:30 He gives his cheek to him that smites him: he is filled full with reproach.

Micah 5:1 Now gather yourself in troops, O daughter of troops: he has laid siege against us...

Matthew 5:39 But I say to you, That you resist not evil: but whoever shall smite you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Matthew 26:67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,

Matthew 27:26 Then released he Barabbas to them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Mark 14:65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say to him, Prophesy...

Mark 15:19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit on him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

my cheeks. The eastern people always held the beard in great veneration; and to pluck a man's beard is one of the grossest indignities that can be offered. D'Arvieux gives a remarkable instance of an Arab, who, having received a wound in his jaw, chose to hazard his life rather than suffer the surgeon to cut off his beard.

2 Samuel 10:4 Why Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle...

that plucked

Nehemiah 13:25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying...

I hid. Another instance of the utmost contempt and destation. Throughout the East it is highly offensive to spit in any one's presence; and if this is such an indignity, how much more spitting in the face?

Context
The Servant's Obedience

4The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakens morning by morning, he wakens my ear to hear as the learned. 5The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. 6I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. 7For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. 8He is near that justifies me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is my adversary? let him come near to me. 9Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? see, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up. 10Who is among you that fears the LORD, that obeys the voice of his servant, that walks in darkness, and has no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay on his God. 11Behold, all you that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that you have kindled. This shall you have of my hand; you shall lie down in sorrow.
